CYRIL, Okla. — Oklahoma State Police are searching for a missing 4-year-old girl after a mail carrier found her sister wandering alone near their home on Tuesday, authorities said.

Local authorities began searching for Athena Brownfield on Tuesday afternoon when a postal worker discovered her 5-year-old sister near an orphanage in Cyril and called police, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, which is also involved in the search.

The Oklahoma State Highway Patrol has released a photo of missing Athena Brownfield.

“The investigation into her whereabouts is active and ongoing,” the agency said Thursday.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol on Wednesday declared a missing and missing person within a 15-mile radius of Cyril, which is about 70 miles southwest of Oklahoma City.

According to Brooke Arbeitman, a spokesman for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, law enforcement is working to put together a timeline of when Athena was last seen.

The parents’ whereabouts are “part of the investigation,” Arbeitman told reporters Wednesday.

“Now our first priority is to locate her and find out who is responsible,” Arbeitman said. “But we need to find that little girl.”

Arbeitman said the child is a victim of physical injury “yet to be determined,” although she is listed in critical condition at this time.

“She’s a young child and she’s missing and she’s out in the elements,” Arbeitman said.

Her sister did not require any medical attention and is currently in state custody, Arbeitman said.

National Center for the Investigation of Missing Persons Arbeitman said children and military personnel from Fort Sill are among those helping with the search. State troopers conducted a sonar search of bodies of water in and around Cyril on Wednesday. The search also involved sniffer dogs from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections and drones from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.

Volunteers also helped conduct a grid search, looking for vacant homes and local bodies of water, police said.

Arbeitman said authorities are finding items in the city that “may be relevant” and useful to the case, although he did not elaborate.

“We’re finding things that we hope can give us clues,” she said.

Law enforcement is urging residents and businesses to share any surveillance footage they may have, including doorbell cameras, and to search their property.

Authorities describe Athena as 3 feet tall and 45 pounds with light brown hair and blue eyes. She is believed to have been wearing a bow tie hoodie recently. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to contact the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation at 800-522-8017 or
