When making a hockey movie there is nothing else to have in front of the camera of real players. Even the best editing techniques or CGI cannot replace someone who knows how to skate.
Here are five movies that used NHL players in their hockey scenes:
> Love Guru (2008)
In this ridiculous comedy Mike Myers plays a relationship expert who helps Maple Leafs star Darren Roanuc get his wife back. Rob Blake plays a cameo role in the role of himself, while two other NHL players play non-talking roles. Former law enforcement officer Bob Probert wears a T-shirt with the name Armstrong on his back and is one of the Kings players who doubly unite Roanoke in the boards. The tough guy Jim Thomson, who got to Los Angeles in the early 1990s, has his own name on a sweater and plays the long-haired captain of the kings without a helmet.
> Sudden Death (1995)
In this action movie about a terrorist plot in the 7th game of the Stanley Cup final, Luke Rabita himself appears. But former Penguins law enforcement officer Jay Cofield also gets time in front of the screen, playing Penguins goalkeeper Brad Toliver. At the beginning of the film, the main character Darren McCord visits the dressing room of the “Penguins”, talks to Rabaital in French, and then has an awkward conversation with the frightening Toliver. Rabitail and Cofield later appear in game sequences.
> Youngblood (1986)
We will never forget the performance of longtime NHL Eric Nesterenko as Blaine Youngblood, who taught his son Dean to “survive on ice.” But some of the background players in the film also went on to have successful careers in the NHL. Paul Cavalini was one of the bombers, while Steve Thomas and Peter Zezel were Mustang players. Thomas Jorde’s character is a Mustang in a leg press machine, which team captain Derek Satan snapped with a towel and then helps Dean with “initiation.” Zezel is an alternate captain of the Mustang Rossini, who first goes on the ice to replace Dean in the final seconds of the final game, only to roll back on the bench when Dean refuses to leave.
> Rocket (2005)
This film about NHL legend Maurice “Rocket” Richard had no shortage of stellar strength. Vincent Lecavalier, Stephane Quintal, Ian Laperier, Pascal Dupuis and Mathieu Dunden play small, non-talking roles like Jean Belivo, Dollar Saint-Laurent, Bernie Jeffrein, Milt Schmidt and Hal Lecco, respectively. However, Mike Richie and Sean Avery have more significant roles. Richie plays Richard Elmer Lach’s partner and has several dialogues. Avery plays cool guy Rangers Bob Dill and gets enough screen time in a key part of the film.
> Mystery, Alaska (1999)
In this hockey drama, former Winger flyer Dale Kushner plays Rangers agitator Ethan. At the start of the game between the Mystery team and the Rangers, Yiton checked the gentle giant “Tree” Lane, took revenge and received a fine, which led to the second goal of Mystery. Ethan later knocks down Mystery Sniper Stevie Weeks on a Rangers bench and then smiles while skating. Mysterious Captain John Bibi returns the favor by literally knocking Ethan out of the rink in the third period.
