Sometimes wait for the automaker to transform indicative concept car into a controlled, purchased reality of production can be felt for decades. In the case of the Volkswagen Microbus it really has been decades.
Two of the most exciting (for very different reasons) concept cars shown in 2001 were Microbus and Nissan Skyline GT-R. It took Nissan six years to hone the latest in the 2007 R35 GT-R, but only now, 21 years after the first cover of the show car was removed, VW has finally fulfilled the promise of the Microbus concept.
Given that we’ve been through four presidents during this time, and that some of the voters in the last of those presidential elections weren’t even born when the Microbus concept was shown, it looks incredibly fresh, just as Audi A2 and TT from the same period also do. VW Group design groups have really burned at the turn of the millennium.
Forget that the Microbus xenon headlights and the atmospheric V6 have a capacity of 231 liters. Instead, look at how clean and unpretentious the design is, recessed door handles, slim horizontal taillights and a touch screen entertainment system.
Seriously if you missed at the time to see this retro minivan and someone showed you today a photo that tells you it was car of 2022 releasewould you have reason not to believe them if it weren’t for the fact that it doesn’t have an iPad Pro glued to the console?
You can even argue that it looks better than ID 2024. Buzzing VW finally delivered. Tougher, more assertive, less dependent on pure nostalgia to excite our emotions. Not surprisingly, there was such a hype in the air when VW announced in June 2002 that it would create a production version of the bus from a T5 van sold in Europe and enter showrooms by the middle of the decade.
As we all know, this did not happen. VW abandoned the project, telling European customers that they would have to deal with the T5 and then trying to convince US buyers that they not only don’t want VW’s cool retro classics, but actually want the ultimately boring Dodge Grand Caravan with badges called VW Routan instead.
However, behind the scenes VW did not allow to completely reject the idea of a new bus. At the Geneva Motor Show 2011 he pointed to Buly, whose name comes from the intense name of the original Type 2 bus, which VW was forced to change to avoid confusion with the German tractor. With a size of 156 inches (3960 mm) to 197 inches (5000 mm) in the Microbus and lowered its seven seats to five, the Bulli was a smaller vehicle but with bigger ideas. But a year later the nostalgic look returned, as did the third row of seats. The Buzz ID struck the crowd at the North American International Motor Show (NAIAS) in 2017 with a combination of stylish replicas clearly taken from the original Type 2 split-screen bus of the 1950s and 60s, as well as three horizontal lines on the C-rack that send up to four on the 2001 Microbus concept and the binding of LED lighting to bring it to the present.
The exterior style was very similar to what we got on ID 2024. Buzzingbut in the true style of concept cars, the interior was bolder, with a large portrait touchscreen and a crazy rectangular multifunction steering wheel that could be tucked into the dashboard for autonomous control. Finally, 21 years after we were captivated by the original Microbus concept, VW was ready to familiarize itself with its production-ready modern incarnation. Compared to the 2017 concept 2024 model year the minivan lost a period (it was ID Buzz and now ID. Buzz), the swivel front seats and part of the cabin glow.
And instead of 369 liters. s. (374 hp), customers will have to do with one 201 hp. s. (204 hp) electric motor from id.4whose MEB platform it shares, although more powerful versions are set later.
