NC State has celebrated two championships in Greensboro over the past few seasons.
Finally it’s time to celebrate one at home in front of the fans.
On the senior night Wolf’s Stage № 4 destroyed Syracuse, 95-53.
After the win, the NC staff captured at least a share of the championship title in the ACC regular season. For the first time in 32 years, “Flock” will receive the crown of the regular season.
NC (25-3, 16-1) could win the title if they beat Virginia Tech next Sunday, but split the crown or not, Reynolds will be given another banner – exactly what head coach Wes Moore wanted for the group.
Before the game, the school honored four high school students – Kyle Jones, Kay Crutchfield, Raine Perez, Alice Quine – and sent them on a high note.
Jones, Crutchfield and Quine already have two titles in the ACC tournament, Perez – one. Now the team has won 17 ACC home games in a row since the end of the 2019-2020 season.
Jones and Crutchfield were part of 129 wins, 65 ACC wins and 72 home wins, more than any other player in school history. They both returned to get to the Final Four and win the national championship. This and another ACC title is still possible.
However, the first point to check was the name of the regular season.
All four seniors start, and they quickly made sure the outcome was unquestionable. NC State jumped 11-0 and increased the score to 28-9 after the first quarter.
In honor of the 1984-85 team, the “Wolf Stack” wore red jerseys. This team won the regular season and ACC tournaments, one of two teams in school history that did so. The 1984-85 team was awarded during the timeout in the first half. At the time, Syracuse led 11-0 and reduced the deficit to 12. Perhaps inspired by the 84-85 team or Moore, who kindled the fire, NC scored the next nine points to stop any serious threat from the Orange.
Jones, a striker from Jamesville, who missed most of the NCAA tournament a year ago, caused a run. She scored five in a row to increase the score to 21. Kunane went into the move, scoring four in a row, making the score 45-24.
So far, Crutchfield was the only senior not to score. The Raleigh native scored 3 just before the break and made an advantage of 22 points at the break. NC State rose 36 after three quarters. The holiday was preceded by the fourth quarter.
The seniors together scored 46 points, led by Jones, who scored 18 points for the season. Kunane scored 14 points and made 10 rebounds. Moore also received 35 points from his bench.
16 victories in the conference set a new program record. Under Moore’s leadership, the team has won at least 25 games five times. Whatever happens in Blacksburg next weekend, Pack will head to Greensboro for the ACC tournament as the top 2 seed. The NC state is already one of the best overall for the NCAA tournament. That would mean the second season in a row. The package was number 1.
The goal in March is to break the glass ceiling on Sweet 16 and reach the Final Four. In 2020, the group won its first ACC tournament title since 1991. A year later she was repeated as champions.
After the victory over the Syracuse, they did not cut the net in Reynolds. They will keep it for Greensboro and hopefully Minneapolis, the Final Four venue. At the moment, at least, they are the champions of the day, and another banner is coming to Reynolds.
