DURHAM, NC (WTVD) — One of North Carolina Central University’s most famous alumni received a major honor on campus Saturday.

A sculpture of Sam Jones was unveiled, who passed away in 2021. His family attended the event, which took place in Durham.

Jones graduated from North Carolina College in 1957 and won 10 NBA championships with the Boston Celtics.

His ten championships are second only to Bill Russell, Jones’ Celtics teammate.

“I’m just excited to be back at my dad’s hometown,” said Aubrey Jones, Jones’ son. “I’ve worn different jerseys for the schools I’ve worked at, but today I’m wearing this shirt, and today I’m a Central Eagle.”

The sculpture, which measures 30 inches tall and 22 inches wide, was created by award-winning Vermont-based artist Douglas Age.

After Saturday’s unveiling, the sculpture will be displayed at McDougald-McLendon Arena to honor the life of Sam Jones.

“Everything goes through your head,” Michael Jones said. “I’m just the proudest son in the world. I lived 62 years with this man, telling me stories and watching him play.”
