Sean Payton’s interview with the Panthers has been postponed following the death of the FC Charlotte player.

CHARLOTTE, NC (WNCN) – The Carolina Panthers are officially set to interview their Super Bowl winning head coach Sean Payton on Friday postponed the meeting following the death of FC Charlotte defender Anton Woakes.

The interview, which was first reported by ESPN’s Diana Russini, says former New Orleans Saints head coach and Panthers owner David Tepper will meet Friday in Manhattan, New York.

Now, NFL insider Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Panthers contingent that was in New York for interviews has flown home since Walks’ death.

“A contingent of Panthers who were in New York conducting coaching interviews flew home following the death of FC Charlotte player Anton Walkes. The group was scheduled to interview Sean Payton on Friday. It is now on hold as owner David Tepper spends time supporting the grieving players,” Rapoport tweeted.

Charlotte Football Club defender Anton Walkes died early Thursday morning after a boat wreck in south Florida.

Now owns both the Panthers and FC Charlotte.

Payton, who will retire from coaching after 2021, confirmed this on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” on Monday that he will be interviewing for jobs with the Panthers, Houston Texans and Denver Broncos. Payton was officially eligible to begin interviews on Tuesday, despite reports that he had finished his interview with Houston on Monday night.

Payton’s contract with the Saints runs through 2024. That means the recruiting team still has to work out a deal with New Orleans to officially hire him. New Orleans also has to give Payton and the team permission to interview him so the two sides can meet.

however, Athletic spoke big panther Greg Olsen on Wednesday, which laid out why that only seemingly led the organization to hire Payton.

The former NFL tight end said acquiring Payton would likely cost Carolina the No. 9 pick. Sending it to a division rival when the team could be looking for a quarterback again doesn’t make sense.

There is also speculation that wherever Payton goes, current Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady will go as well.

“If you’re the Panthers and you’re a team that wants to finally get some stability at quarterback, I know it’s Tom Brady. But you’re bringing in another veteran, probably for one year,” Olsen told The Athletic. “You’re probably going to lose the ninth overall pick if you have Sean, so you’re not going to draft your future (quarterback). So how are you going to get your quarterback behind Tom? You won’t get drafted because you won’t have a first round pick. Hopefully if you bring Tom you won’t have a top 10 pick next year. How far do you push the can?”

There is some merit to Brady’s move after Tampa Bay fired offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, linebackers coach Chris Bagniola, receivers coach Kevin Garver, offensive quality control coach Jeff Castle, DL assistant coach Laura Lacoste and running backs coach Todd McNair. Quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen, senior offensive assistant Rick Christoffel and defensive backs coach Bob Sanders also retired Thursday.

However, intra-unit deals are rare.

The latest was the Detroit Lions’ agreement to trade tight end TJ Hockenson to the Minnesota Vikings for several picks. Let’s be honest; we’re still scratching our heads.

Still, Olsen called Payton’s hiring “a no-brainer” when it came down to it, in an interview with The Athletic.

“Offensive guy, decades of experience, defensive developer, proven winner,” Olsen told The Athletic. “They won consistently, consistently in the playoffs — year after year. So I think he should be at the top.”

Olsen commented on Carolina’s need for an offensive head coach to lead the team, pointing to this year’s playoff squad as an example of their importance. But the fear is that the factors influencing Payton are still too cool.
