BANNER ELK, NC – The snowplows are out. Tourists are coming. And it is snowing. As the wintry weather intensified Friday, Banner Elk got busier. Lexington, South Carolina resident Shane Conner says, “It’s really great because in the middle of South Carolina we don’t see snow.” Conner and his family are wrapping up their winter vacation. They stopped on the way out of town to let the children play in the freshly fallen flakes. He says, “I’ve been coming here since I was a kid. It’s really cool to see our kids doing what I did when I was their age.” His son Fenn tells us, “It gets stuck in your jacket and stuff, but it’s really refreshing.” He noted, “Not much snow, but still a lot of fun.”

Don’t worry snow lovers, snow is coming. Nearby Beech Mountain could see six inches by the end of the weekend. They were still making snow on Friday afternoon when we stopped. Chapel Hill, North Carolina resident Shawn Fahey tells us, “It was really good, the snow was really good.” Fahey says the lifts are full of snow enthusiasts who headed to the mountains when they heard the forecast. He says: “It is of great importance. If you don’t have fresh snow, it’s not skiing, you know you’re going to be sliding, sliding everywhere, you want that powder!”

At the time of writing, it was 21 degrees and raining on Beech Mountain. The snow continued to fall and the night skiing was open!
