Strong winds blow roof off building in Durham, power outages reported in NC

DURHAM, NC — A cold atmospheric front brought inclement weather and heavy rain to the Triangle at night, leaving thousands of people without electricity and even removing the roof of the building.

According to the National Meteorological Service, severe thunderstorm warnings were issued in several areas. There were wind gusts of up to 60 mph and reports of hail before the warning ended at 10:15 p.m.

By late Thursday night, 9,000 North Carolina homes were without power, with 1,862 outages in Orange County. Vance County reported 758 outages, Durham County reported 613 outages and Chatham County reported 594 outages.

As of Friday morning, more than 2,000 customers were still without power.

A roof became entangled in power lines in Durham near North LaSalle Street, where strong winds tore the roof off a building that had stood in Durham for nearly 50 years.
