WASHINGTON – The Justice Department searched President Joe Biden’s Delaware home and seized additional items containing classified information, his lawyers said Saturday.
On Friday, the Justice Department searched Biden’s residence in Wilmington and found six items consisting of classified documents, some of which were in the Senate in addition to his tenure as vice president during the Obama administration.
Agents took handwritten notes from his years as vice president.
According to Biden’s personal attorney, Bob Bauer, the search lasted about 12 hours, starting at 9:45 a.m. and ending around 10:30 p.m.
“The Department of Justice had full access to the president’s home, including decades of personally handwritten notes, files, papers, binders, memorabilia, to-do lists, schedules and memos,” Bauer said in a statement.
Bauer said they “offered to provide quick access to his home to allow the Department of Justice to search the entire premises” after some documents were found at the Wilmington residence in late December and again earlier this month.
White House lawyer Richard Sauber said in a separate statement, emphasizing cooperation with the Department of Justice. Sauber added that neither Biden nor first lady Jill Biden were at the residence during the search.
“The president’s lawyers and the White House counsel’s office will continue to work with the Justice Department and the special counsel to help ensure that this process is swift and efficient,” Sauber said.
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel on January 12 to investigate Biden’s handling of classified documents.
Biden himself commented on the issue on Thursday during a trip to California, telling reporters, “It’s not there.”
“We found a handful of documents … were filed in the wrong place, we immediately turned them over to the (National) Archives and the Department of Justice,” he said. “We are fully cooperating and look forward to a speedy resolution to this matter.”
“I think you’ll find there’s nothing there,” he continued. “I don’t regret anything. I follow what the lawyers told me to do. This is exactly what we do. There is no “there”. Thank you.”
