“Mr. Ma, who is very well-liked and respected in the dance community and has been doing this for over 20 years – he tried to stop the shooter and he died,” said friend Eric Chen.

A survivor after the shooting, who was called Shali dancing with his old friend and dance partner when a gunman entered the Star Ballroom Dance Studio and opened fire.

She said she grabbed her dance partner and hid under the table. Her 62-year-old friend, who she did not want to name, was shot in the back and rescued during the shooting.

When the gunman left, she tried to wake up her dance partner, but realized he had been shot.

Meanwhile, seven of the 10 injured remain hospitalized Sunday night, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said.

The sheriff said the department does not typically release the names of hospitals where victims of violent crimes are treated. But in this case, he said, the disturbing incident reinforces the decision to keep that information secret.

“Someone called one of these hospitals to say something like they wanted to go and get the job done,” Luna said. “It’s absolutely horrible.”

“Please, these victims and survivors are dealing with a lot. Let’s not traumatize them even more.”

All families and victims of the shooting are encouraged to come to Langley Senior Center at 400 W. Emerson Avenuewhere the crisis response team is located.
