With years of experience as a leader in education, Carl Harris’ 98EDD took office as the new chairman of the board of the NC College of Education on March 8th.
Harris, who earned his Ed.D. in education management from the NC National College of Education, since 2013 is a board member. Throughout his career, he has held numerous leadership positions in education, including as Head of Durham Public Schools and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and Public Technical Assistance in the Office of Primary and Secondary Education within the United States Department of Education.
Harris is looking forward to the opportunity to bring his leadership experience to his new role.
“I am grateful to be part of an amazing team of people and professionals who are very committed to supporting the continued educational growth of students, faculty, and the wider community,” Harris said. “My goal is for each board member to have ongoing opportunities to use their vision, knowledge, and interests in a significant way to support the college’s further progress.”
Harris has been honored with numerous awards and honors for his contributions to education. In 2008, he received the University Board of Educational Management Award for Leadership in Education, becoming one of 33 educators recognized nationally and the only educator in North Carolina to receive the award. In 2010, he received the Order of the Long Pine, the most prestigious award presented by the Governor of North Carolina, and in 2011 he also received the Outstanding Award from the North Carolina College of Education.
In addition to his roles as class teacher, coach, and district office administrator, Harris has served on steering groups of various professional organizations and is a past president North Carolina Association of School Administrators.
As Chair of the College Board of Education, Harris will chair a board that promotes the well-being and future development of the College through advocacy, counseling, fundraising and service, and helps connect people with the mission and vision of the College of Education.
