A 100-year-old man considers yoga his youth

Don Burns just celebrated his 100th birthday. As surprising as that is in itself, he’s actually in better health than he was 15 years ago. Burns says he took up yoga and discovered the fountain of youth. He believes that yoga keeps him flexible and mobile. “Well, she just makes you move, every part of your body,” Burns said. Burns started taking classes 15 years ago at Gwen Hull. She says it helped him in several ways. His instructor noticed improvements in his balance, strength and mobility. “So you want to have the strength to get up off the floor and get up and down and be independent,” Hull said. By improving his health, Burns was able to maintain his autonomy and well-being. His 96-year-old brother came this week with his family and they were impressed. “He started to slow down, and then all of a sudden, I guess he started doing yoga 15 years ago, and then he started getting up and moving,” Burns’ niece, Heidi Burns, told Mille. His nephew did not expect the 100-year-old to be so lively. “He’s very flexible and I’m just surprised he’s not in the hospital and taking care of himself,” Mike Burns said. The elder Burns comes to class twice a week in jeans, suspenders and a shirt. Burns says he enjoys the benefits he gets from yoga. “It’s just a lot of different body positions you go through and getting up and down,” said the 100-year-old. In fact, he believes it is one of several secrets to a long and healthy life.

“Well, it just gets you moving, all parts of your body,” Burns said.
