RALEIGH, NC (WNCT) — Richard Todd proved that when you play big, you can also win big.
A Roanoke Rapids resident took a chance on a $30 scratch-off and won a $1 million prize. He purchased his lucky Millionaire Maker ticket at the Speed Mart on East 10th Street in Roanoke Rapids.
When Todd arrived at lottery headquarters last Friday, he had a decision to make. He could choose the prize in the form of an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum payment of $600,000. He opted for the $600,000 lump sum and took home $427,509 after mandatory state and federal taxes.
Scratch card sales raise an average of more than $2.5 million per day for education. The state has awarded $89 million in grants, using lottery money, to help Halifax County build new schools.
