A man died in a car accident, fell on I-40 in Durham :: WRAL.com

– The I-40 East reopened on Friday night after being stopped for several hours when the car overturned over the overpass and drove onto the interstate.

The crash caused severe delays, and some city officials again pointed to a shortage of police in Durham.

Friday 15-501, a trail of destruction that ends in tragedy.

The Durham Police Department said the 2017 Tesla, which was moving east, was driven by 45-year-old Zack A. A military man from Apex collided with the rear bumper of another car, which was also heading east along Durham Chapel Hill.

After the initial impact, Tesla drove off the roadway to the right, crashed into a fence, two road signs and a telephone pole before taking off from the waterfront over Interstate 40 east.

Police said Tesla overturned when it fell on an embankment and got on wheels on all three lanes of Interstate 40 to the east.

The military was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other car was not injured but was taken to a local hospital for examination.

Todd Morris saw it happen. Tesla crashed into a black Toyota before crashing into a fence and across the side.

“It was a bad scene,” Morris said. “She broke it.”

Christina Deschane soon passed by.

The mother tried to protect her children from the scene.

“I said,‘ Don’t look! Don’t look! ” because you never want your kids to see it, “Dashain said.” It’s traumatic. “

Friday’s crash came after a series of incidents at numbers 15-501, including shooting at road rage just a week ago.

Durham board member Leonard Williams said that while there is no indication that the disaster is linked, it once again underscores the need for more staff and support from Durham police.

“They are happening in my area. I am very concerned, as are our residents,” Williams said. “We need all the hands on deck, and we need them now because we have a problem now.”
