RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) – After canceling a major music festival in Atlanta, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper extended an invitation to an event in his state.

Midtown Music organizers announced the festival was canceled on Monday. In a Facebook post, they said: “… Due to circumstances beyond our control, Music Midtown will no longer be taking place this year. We are looking forward to seeing you in September and hope that we can all enjoy the festival together again soon.”

In response, Cooper wrote on his Facebook, urging organizers to consider North Carolina.

“We’re ready to welcome you to one of our beautiful outdoor venues to help you have a fun and safe festival,” Cooper said online Tuesday.

Although Midtown Music has not confirmed, there are reports that organizers cut the cord due to Georgia’s gun laws.

The Atlanta-Journal Constitution (referenced by Cooper in his Facebook post) reports that officials familiar with the cancellation said the decision came as a result of the 2014 gun law.

The law allows citizens to legally carry firearms in more places, including the park where the festival was to be held.

The 2022 law allows concealed weapons without a permit.

It looks like the law may have caused a riff as all weapons were banned at the festival.

In North Carolina, residents are allowed to carry concealed weapons if they have a permit. State law allows private property owners to ban guns on their property.

Atlanta could reportedly lose $50 million in economic impact. Mayor Doug Shipman called the cancellation a “sad day” for his city. Shipman also tweeted: “Public policy has a real impact, and in this case, economic and social consequences for a great tradition.”

It’s unclear whether Midtown Music organizers will take Cooper up on his offer, but cities looking to capitalize on the festival’s economic impact will be keeping their fingers crossed.

Midtown Music is a weekend event that has been lined up for upcoming artists such as My Chemical Romance, Future, Jack White and Fall Out Boy. Refunds are offered for those who bought tickets.
