Airbus first achieved clean aviation when the H225 made its first ever helicopter flight with both Safran Makila 2 engines running on 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which is typically derived from biomass, including waste fat and oil.

The recent test flight is part of Airbus ’policy to achieve 100 percent SAF certification for both commercial aircraft and helicopters by 2030, and to achieve a 50 percent reduction in helicopter carbon emissions without reducing flight performance.

This follows from a number of previous Airbus SAF tests, including flight H225 with 100% SAF with one engine in November 2021 and one engine with A380 Jumbo Jet in March 2022. The purpose of these flights is not only to demonstrate the ability of engines to run on SAF without modifications, but also to measure their impact on aircraft systems.

They will be followed by tests on different types of helicopters that use different fuels and engine configurations.

Designed to reduce aviation carbon emissions by up to 75 percent on the way to the planned zero targets by 2050, SAFs are produced primarily by hydrotreated esters and fatty acids (HEFA) using waste and residues as raw materials. These include wastes of fats, oils and fats; municipal waste; agricultural and forestry waste; captured carbon; and exhaust gases.

One of the advantages of SAF is that they are a fuel that is almost identical to their fossil fuel counterpart and can now be legally blended up to 50 percent with conventional aviation fuel without engine modifications, resulting in reduced carbon emissions by as much as 85 percent over the entire life cycle of the aircraft.

“This flight from SAF with twin-engine H225s is an important milestone for the helicopter industry. It marks a new milestone in our path to certifying the use of 100 percent SAF in our helicopters, a fact that will mean up to 90 percent reduction in CO2 emissions only.” , – said Stephen Tom, Executive Vice President, Engineering and Technical Director of Airbus Helicopters.
