RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) – Watch out for unwanted lyrics that you just can’t stop because scammers get millions of dollars out of it. You used to have to worry about spam calls, but now it’s spam texts.

For the second year in a row on the anniversary RoboKiller report 2021 Phone Scam Insights, spam texts exceed the number of spam calls.

The report shows that in 2021, 87.8 billion spam texts were sent, exceeding 72.2 billion spam calls over the same time period. Many of these text scams result in big losses if you click on one.

The now popular scam involves getting a text that seems to have been from your bank about a accusation of fraud on your account. When you click on a link or call a number, scammers try to access your bank account and merge it. Other forms of scam texts include scammers who pretend to be from a legitimate company such as Netflix or Amazon, and claim an offer that is hard for you to turn down.

To try to stop fraudulent texts, reply STOP to spam texts to unsubscribe and unsubscribe from your mailing list. Another tip is to lock the number to prevent further texts. You can also report fraud and spam by redirecting the text to 7726 (spam) by reporting it on FTC fraud siteand report it as a scam to your cellular operator.
