WINSTON-SALM, NC (WGHP) – On one of the streets of Winston-Salem there is a terrible feeling after a fire claimed the life of an elderly woman.
Isaiah Stevenson Sr. told about watching the flames engulf the house at 4556 Renigar Street.
“It’s just a weird feeling to see something like that,” Stevenson said. “Knowing that someone was still there … was even worse.”
Winston-Salem police told FOX8 that while firefighters tried to put out the flames in the house, they found the body of 81-year-old Barbara Harman.
“I saw them when they took a little yellow top to cover the body … it was sad. I don’t want that for anyone, “said neighbor Chantelle Wilson.
Previously, the house was the family home of one woman. There she raised her children.
Then more than ten years ago she decided to move and turn a home into a home for the elderly and people with disabilities.
It is one of three she runs in Winston-Salem.
She and her housekeeper told FOX8 that there were four people in the house at the time of the fire: two men aged 53 and 62, 81-year-old Barbara Harman and a caregiver.
Wilson watched as the tutor ran inside to try to save Harmon.
“It was very sad. I hate to see something happen to anyone. Tears welled up in my eyes when they couldn’t pull her out, ”Wilson said.
Investigators cleared the scene Thursday afternoon after combing broken glass, melting siding and charred furniture for more than 12 hours.
In their initial fire attack, emergency responders described a strong flame in the basement of the house that moved to the main floor and roof.
Investigators say it may be several days before they can determine the cause.
