August 3 (GMM) A deadline is fast approaching that will spoil Andretti’s plans to enter Formula 1.

Former McLaren driver Michael Andretti is pushing to get the green light for America’s new entry into Formula 1, but is facing stiff resistance from some existing teams.

When asked about the status of F1 plans, Andretti Autosport executive vice-president Jean-Francois Thormann told Speed Week: “We are not waiting for the final version of the 2026 regulations.

“We want to start earlier. But with the plan for 2024, everything is straining. Yes, the deadline is very close,” said Thormann, who is also the chief operating officer.

Speed Week correspondent Gerhard Kuntschik suggests that Andretti’s deadline is the European fall.

A secondary priority at the moment, therefore, is the driver line-up – with Indycar top star Colton Herta as the leading candidate.

“We’ll see who’s the best fit,” Thorman said. “An American would be very nice, but not a must.”

Renault is believed to be already lined up as a powertrain supplier, but Tormann insists: “We are basically talking to all possible partners.”

As for the F1 factory, Andretti runs its Formula E production at the former Marussia facility in Banbury, UK, but Thormann said F1 would need a better facility.

“Our current Formula E base will not be sufficient for Formula 1,” he admitted.

He denies that Michael Andretti, 59, has “unfinished business” in Formula 1 after his ill-fated 1993 McLaren adventure, insisting that F1 just makes sense for the company.

“IndyCar, Formula E, Formula 1 – that would be an interesting portfolio, wouldn’t it?” Thorman said.
