As well as raising a significant amount for the Royal Marines, the Apogee team also accompanied veteran Lee Spencer BEM to his latest event, the Great Britain Triathlon.
Managed Workplace Services (MWS) provider Apogee Corporation have collectively raised more than £21,000 for the Royal Marines charity as part of the Great Britain Triathlon – the latest challenge for Lee Spencer, known as the Rowing Marine.
Apogee staff raised £11,032 per JustGiving.com, which will be donated to the charities in addition to the company’s initial pledge of £10,000 at the recent charity auction. Donations made to the Team Apogee fundraiser will go towards supporting the charity to continue helping veterans; including (but not limited to) mental health training, career counseling, education, alcohol programs, and support for wounded, injured, and ill veterans.
The UK-wide challenge was on a scale never before attempted by an athlete, able-bodied or otherwise – theoretically combining 1,060 miles of cycling with 45 miles of hill walking. over Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis; and a 22-mile swim.
This mammoth event was launched to raise money for the Royal Marines Charity, which is uniquely placed to help marines and their families cope with the challenges of transition to civilian life, poverty, mental disabilities, life-limiting illnesses , and – injury change.
After the accident that took his leg, Lee’s rehabilitation at the Royal Marines Charities surrounded him with servicemen and women whose lives had been irreparably changed by their service. By participating in competitions like this, Lee hopes to not only raise awareness, but also inspire veterans who are trying to reinvent themselves after life-changing injuries.
“Disabilities are different, and they’re not just physical,” says Lee Spencer.
“I hope to be able to inspire all those looking to reinvent themselves and to raise awareness and funds for a very worthy charity that has supported and inspired me.”
Apogee staff have collectively raised over £11,000 through their own individual sponsorship campaigns – each of them pitching in at specific stages along the way to support Lee’s cause along the way.
“It was a huge honor to be able to support Lee throughout the cycle and climbing; and see for yourself the strength, determination and passion Lee has shown for RMA in supporting ex-servicemen and women,” says Ryan Hudson, Apogee Content Marketing Manager. “Lee’s story, attitude and message is an inspiration to all.”
Ryan was part of the team that accompanied Lee on the climb to the top of Scafell Pike, as well as on the previous cycle journey from Preston to Wesdale Head.
Vic Drinkwater, Fundraising Manager at the Royal Marines, adds: “A huge thank you to the Apogee team on behalf of RMA The Royal Marine Charity. What determination and drive you had throughout the fundraising – such amazing tenacity, a spirit of support and encouragement and a real display of a cheerful attitude and approach throughout.”
“Team Apogee’s fundraising has also been phenomenal in supporting the overall Lee Triathlon UK fundraising campaign. Without this dedicated and dedicated support from all of you, the charity would not be able to continue its vital work and we are all very grateful and grateful for all your efforts.”
Carl Day, Director of Sales and Marketing at Apogee, says: “We are inspired by Lee’s efforts and ambitions and are very proud of our employees who have supported him. A huge thank you to everyone who donated to help Team Apogee raise £11k for our Royal Marines!”
