HEPA vs. PECO filters: what’s the difference?

Most of us are probably familiar with HEPA or high performance particulate filters. Most air purifiers have it as well as some vacuum cleaners. These mechanical air filters pass air through a very fine mesh to trap impurities that mix in the air. To be considered a HEPA filter, it must remove from the air up to 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. The great thing about HEPA filters is that they become more efficient as they pollute the air, whereas electrostatic-charged air filters require more frequent replacement.

PECO or photoelectrochemical oxidation technology, on the other hand, is a kind of filter that gives allergens, bacteria or viruses no chance of developing. Instead of trapping these toxins, PECO uses light to spark the nanocoated filter and achieve a catalytic oxidation reaction. Basically, organic matter is broken down into tiny harmless molecules. Because PECO filters do not collect particles, they can clean up contaminants that are about 1,000 times smaller than HEPA filters. It cleans and disinfects the air without having to dispose of anything and risk being exposed to this handful of dirt.

How to choose an air purifier

There are many factors to consider when choosing an air purifier. In addition to the brand, start with the size of the room in which you will use the device. You may find some models with the AHAM Verified seal. This sale means that the cleaner has been independently tested and passed the quality provided by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. You can also compare CADR (fresh air supply rate), which refers to the amount of clean air that an air purifier can produce at the highest speed compared to a cubic meter of space. The higher the CADR, the faster and more efficient the air purifier.

If you or family members have allergies or asthma, you can also look American Asthma and Allergy Foundation Air purifiers with this certification are guaranteed to reduce the amount of allergens in the air in both carpeted and hardwood floors. Examples of certified air purifiers for asthma and allergies include designated Dyson Pure Hot + Cool LG PuriCare, 360 and RabbitAir Minus A2 and A3 models.

Since air purifiers usually run all day, consider the cost of energy. Pay attention to the Energy Star logo, which ensures that the air purifier is at least 40% more energy efficient than typical models. You will need to consider how much you are willing to spend on replacing filters or choosing a filter with washable filters. Some air purifiers are excessively noisy, so check for quiet operation or night modes.

There are air purifiers with specialized filters that absorb certain contaminants. HEPA filters are common for handling allergens, pet hair, fur, dust mites and pollen, while activated carbon devices are recommended for removing odors. There are also models that are designed for smoke or for people with different chemical sensitivities.

While most air purifiers promise ease of use, some appliances raise the rate with built-in smart features. Conventional air purifiers work in one or two ways. Those with continuous air filtration work almost like a room fan in which you press the right speed and it consistently moves the air at that speed. Others have automatic air filtration modes that detect impurities using air quality sensors and adjust accordingly to remove them from the air. Smart air purifiers allow you to monitor and control the quality of your air. You can also find out exactly which microorganisms have infiltrated your home or office. Some smart air purifiers work combined with smart home systems and devices, for example compatible with Amazon Alexa.

The best air purifier is the one that best suits your needs. Additional features such as noise, portability, touch programs with LED indicators, timer, remote control or smart features are secondary compared to the size of the room and the corresponding filtration system. Air purifiers can improve indoor air quality by eliminating allergens that hover in the air. Heavier particles that fall to the ground faster may or may not be captured in time.
