A Michigan thief in a stolen Ford F-150 Raptor unwittingly led cops to the location of three more missing pickup trucks and a GT500 Mustang without noticing that a police helicopter was following him.

The incident began Wednesday night when Michigan State Police received a report of several high readings Ford Raptor pickups was stolen from the Ford factory in Dearborn. The paratroopers received information that the thieves were wearing ski masks and the direction of their movement, so they decided to send a helicopter for their reconnaissance.

One of the Raptors was quickly located and followed, the landing crew giving the ground officers updated location information so they could put the cops in the cars ready to attack. The driver of the tracked truck abandoned his Raptor near the house, but the pickup truck was found, and soon after, police were able to stop a car leaving the same address, driven by a man wearing a ski mask.

Three suspects were arrested and police recovered three more vehicles that appeared to be stolen, including a Mustang GT500 that was seized from Ford’s Flat Rock plant earlier this year. It’s a four-by-five car The GT500 hit the market in Junethree of which were found on the same day that police had a narrow success in their fight to end a series of thefts at factories in metro Detroit.

The thermal imaging camera footage from the police helicopter looks incredibly cool, making the heat from the truck’s dual exhaust pipes look like the Raptor has a pair of missiles attached to the underside of the bed. And when we get a chance to jump behind the wheel of a new one 2023 F-150 Raptor R, hopefully later this year, we suspect it will be similar as well. The standard Raptor is reasonably quick thanks to a 450-hp 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6. (456 hp), but the Raptor R gets a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 from the Mustang Shelby GT500 that develops 700 hp. (710 hp) and 640 lb-ft (868 Nm) of torque.

That’s not a lot of muscle like the GT500 itself (760 hp / 771 hp) or Ram TRX (702 hp / 712 hp), but it should propel the R to 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than 4 seconds. However, don’t even think about stealing from the Ford factory and trying to overtake the eye in the sky: the top speed of the Raptor R is artificially limited to just 120 mph (193 km/h).
