Japanese battery company Envision AESC has announced that it is investing $ 2 billion to build a new battery plant in Kentucky Park in Bowling Green.
The new plant will cover about 3 million square feet and will produce battery cells and modules for “several global car manufacturers.” It is expected that its annual capacity will be about 30 GWh – this is enough to power about 300,000 EV.
The state government will provide up to $ 116.8 million in incentives as well as a $ 5 million grant for skills training.
“Envision AESC is making the second-largest investment in economic development Kentucky has ever seen,” said Governor Andrew Besher. “This project will create 2,000 great jobs of the future for the residents of the Warren region. Thanks to these investments, Envision AESC will create a 30 GWh site, which will increase production in Kentucky to 116 GWh, making the Commonwealth the world’s leading producer of batteries for electric vehicles.
Envision says the new factory will produce next-generation rechargeable batteries that provide 30% more energy density than the current generation. The Gigafactory will be powered by 100% renewable energy, which will be supplied from on-site generation and purchased from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
“The Bowling Green area today has excellent automotive personnel, as well as the necessary talent for the future,” said Envision AESC Managing Director USA Jeff Deaton. “The addition of this new facility will make Kentucky the new capital of U.S. gig factories, which is well positioned to meet projected EV growth and attract future investment.”
