Tuesday was a rough day for the Vikings running backs.
After the team announced the starting tight end Irv Smith Jr. will miss the preseason with a thumb injury, starting running back Dalvin Cook left practice with what appeared to be a hand injury. He returned to take one team shot before sitting out the rest of Tuesday’s practice at the TCO Performance Center.
Later, his understudy, Alexander Matheson, also injured his finger during the game. He also watched the rest of the training from the sidelines.
And third-string running back Kene Nwangwu suffered what coach Kevin O’Connell called a “soft-tissue shin injury” on Monday. He sat on Monday and Tuesday.
“He has to be day-to-day,” O’Connell said. “Just be smart about it.”
Safety Harrison Smith, cornerback Patrick Peterson and guard Jesse Davis were rested Tuesday as O’Connell continues to try to retain its older veterans for the start of the regular season.
