Educational materials created Erin Krupa and Robin Andersonassistant professors in the Department of Mathematics Education at North Carolina State College, have been selected as winners of the International Society for Technology in Education’s Best of STEM Awards.
The materials were created within the framework of Design and Presentation Issues in STEM: Connecting Entrepreneurship and Mathematics Education,” which is funded by a $1.4 million National Science Foundation grant. The project materials were selected as the first place winner in the Educator’s Choice for Social Impact: Developing Citizen Scientists category.
“We work very hard to make math materials interesting and engaging for kids, so this award gives us external recognition that the work we do is meaningful and important,” said Krupa, who is the project’s principal investigator. . “We hope that as a result of this award, more students and teachers will be able to find and access our Design & Pitch Challenges in STEM.”
As part of the Design and Presentation Challenges in STEM project, Krupa and co-principal investigator Anderson are developing nine challenges based on the high school math curriculum that encourage students to create and refine STEM product prototypes, develop business plans to demonstrate product viability, and give presentations his products to the jury.
The project is based on the work of Joseph D. Moore, Jerry Confrey Professor Emeritus of Mathematics Education, who developed a Design and Pitch Framework for high school students using a National Science Foundation grant awarded in 2018.
Krupa said the current project team created four problems that align with high school math content. These include:
- Reduce, reuse, repurposewhich is designed to encourage students to create a new product from waste sent to landfill
- Negative noisewhich is designed to encourage students to use the power of active noise cancellation technology to reduce noise pollution
- Reimagined routeswhich is designed for students to create new criteria for navigating the world around them
- Games for changewhich is designed to allow students to create a projectile moving video game to improve communication and well-being.
