CAMDEN COUNTY, NC (WAVY) – Dismal Swamp State Park in Camden County is due to close on June 14 for a major overhaul of the bridge that allows entry to the park.
Officials from the NC Parks and Recreation Department confirmed the planned closure in a release on Tuesday, saying repairs are expected to take six months.
“These renovations will provide much-needed upgrades to the park bridge and surrounding areas and ensure a safe entrance to the park for years to come,” said Adam Carver, park manager. Park officials are asking visitors to observe the closure, which will operate seven days a week, for their safety.
The park will remain closed during construction. Visitors can still access the main canal, the Federal Waterway, via a boat descent at the end of Balahak Road or at Swiers Creek in Camden.
The project will also repair canoes and kayaks for safety reasons while repairing the bridge.
Construction will begin on the west side of the canal, where asphalt will be removed and the area will be leveled to improve water outflow from the visitor center. The wooden beams on the fixed part of the bridge will be replaced.
On the east side of the bridge and the bridge, and the truck will be dismantled and transported outside the site for repairs. While this repair is underway, asphalt and concrete around the bridge tender building will be removed to fix the site prices. All gates on the bridge will be repaired.
Updates on the opening of the park will be available on the park’s website HERE.
