A new report published by Virgin Media Business and the United Greater Manchester Authority (GMCA) highlights the difference that the multimillion-dollar digital investment in a full-fiber connection makes for local Manchester residents.

In 2020, GMCA commissioned Virgin Media Business to connect more than 1,500 public sites to a new full-fiber network in Greater Manchester as part of the UK’s largest program, Local Full Fiber Networks (LFFN).

Virgin Media Business has included a number of social value initiatives in a five-year program in support of Manchester’s Big Blueprint, including a commitment to create 20 educational institutions in the field and invest in digital and STEM skills for young people.

Since the start of the project, Virgin Media Business and GMCA have connected to their network 15 shelters for the homeless, community centers and charities, and this year it is planned to connect six more sites. Providing free connectivity in public spaces, the project allows locals to access online services, develop digital skills and go online to do homework.

Other social initiatives dedicated to Tackling digital inequality in Greater Manchester The report includes:

  • donating 567 sets of digital kits to ensure that students from Greater Manchester who are at risk of digital shutdown can continue their education if schools were closed during the blockade;
  • funding three digital skills programs with the Prince’s Trust
    and GMCA;
  • a donation of £ 100,000 to the Greater Manchester Mayor’s “Lock Every Night” charity program to help fight homelessness; and
  • more than 1,000 hours of Virginia Business staff volunteering, with an additional 4,000 hours over the next four years.
