Free up space on your Android by updating one app

Regardless of the size of your Android phone’s internal memory, making sure you have enough space can be challenging. As apps and mobile games grow, so do their sizes. Tap or click for eight easy tips to speed up and clean up your Android phone.

Recording videos in high definition and taking lots of photos is a surefire way to fill up your phone’s memory quickly. Of course, you can always move some items to the cloud, but they won’t be available if you don’t have mobile data.

But there is another solution to free up much needed space. Read on to learn how you can increase your storage by updating a single app.

Here’s the backstory

Google includes many tools in the Android mobile operating system that you can tinker with. One of these is called Google files and is designed as a single application where you can organize and access all kinds of documents, photos and data on your device.

But the biggest problem many Android users face is that Files by Google is sometimes clunky and not always clear how to use it. However, Google has made some changes over the past few months.

For example, it added a Favorites folder for quick navigation and better Google Photos integration so you can delete images on your device after backing them up to the cloud.

For some, this may not be enough free space. As mentioned, apps and mobile games have become more prominent and can easily take up the bulk of your device’s memory. A recent update to Files by Google makes it easier to see which apps are taking up the most space.

What can you do about it

While you can go to the Play Store and manage your installed apps, the updated Files app does it efficiently. If you open the Files app and go to the Applications tab, you’ll notice the addition of Smart Chip Filtering options.

By clicking on “Large Apps”, Files by Google will show you the apps that are of significant size. This makes it easy to see which apps are taking up the most space. Combining this with the Unused Apps chip gives you an instant view of the most popular apps you’ve never used. There is also a chip that will only show you games, and you can combine multiple chips for a better search.

Police on Android notes that you’ll only see a list of big, unplayed games if you activate all three tokens. This new filtering in Files by Google makes it incredibly easy to quickly and efficiently remove apps that take up valuable space.

Don’t panic when you open the updated Files by Google app for the first time and a notification pops up. After the update, it may request permission to access your data again, including apps, photos, and other files.
