Grimsley and Page boys basketball began Friday night with a top spot in the Metro 4A standings. Their rivalry came at the perfect time as the Whirlies and Pirates battled for first place in a raucous game at Page High School. Paige channeled the crowd’s energy into an early lead, but Grimsley quickly took control behind the strong play of Jaylana Bumpas and Alex Taylor. The Whirlies beat the Pirates 75-39. With the result, Grimsley improved to 12-4 while Page dropped to 9-7. The varsity game had quite the opposite mood. The Page girls treated their home crowd to a dominant 61-28 win over Grimsley. Caroline Kelly and Hattie Sloyan made important contributions to the Pirates’ victory. The Page girls improved to 8-7, while Grimsley dropped to 3-12.
