Historic OBX sign stolen

AVON, NC (WNCN) – The Dare County Sheriff’s Office is asking to return a key historic piece of the Outer Banks to its rightful home.

The sheriff’s office said the Avon sign on the north end was stolen on or about July 30 of this year.

“Welcome to Avon, Historically Named Kinnakeet” is a 6-by-4-foot sign that “offers a little history lesson” for those who visit.

Dare County deputies said whoever took down the sign must have known what they were doing, too, since the sign was bolted to the poles that were left behind.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Dare County Sheriff’s Office at 252-475-5980.
