Honda may return to Formula 1 in 2026 – report

June 24 (GMM) “Formula 1” and “Volkswagen” are nervous because of the delay in finalizing the rules of the engines for 2026.

Porsche and Audi intend to join Formula One to start a simpler and more environmentally friendly set of new engine rules, but Auto Motor und Sport reports that “negotiations and internal quarrels” are delaying the green light.

“In fact, the World Council should approve the regulations on June 29,” said correspondent Michael Schmidt.

“Audi and Porsche are now getting the green light ahead of the summer holidays, while the FIA promises it will appear in July.”

However, this will probably not have time for the Austrian Grand Prix, where Porsche and Red Bull, apparently, wanted to formalize their cooperation in 2026.

The delay also means the identity of Audi’s production partner, who is said to be Sauber, will remain a mystery for now.

Meanwhile, the Volkswagen Group is apparently “nervous” that Formula 1 has been taking its 2026 regulations for so long.

And, according to Schmidt, also the general director of Formula 1 Stefano Domenicali, because two more car manufacturers involved in the sport – it’s a big deal.

Obviously, the delays are due to the reconciliation of differences between VW brands and well-known manufacturers in Formula 1, especially in the face of new financial constraints.

In addition, the “internal FIA dispute” further prolonged the situation when it was reported about the conflict between FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and Secretary General Peter Bayer, which led to the departure of the latter.

Now Ben Sulayem has assured VW brands that the rules will take effect in July.

“This was confirmed personally to the management of Audi and Porsche at separate conferences before the Canadian Grand Prix Ben Sulayem and Domenicali,” said Schmidt.

After the deals with Audi and Porsche are concluded in stone, Schmidt believes it is possible that Honda will announce a full return to Formula 1 in 2026.

“If that happens, they can team up with Alpha Tauri or even take over the Faenza team,” he said.

“After the summer holidays we need to know more.”
