A few weeks ago in an update on Alabama football the pursuit of the defender of 2023, the patience of Nick Saban was mentioned. Never in a hurry to close the player, Saban then and Saban now seem in no hurry to grab a fix from the top QB.

That doesn’t mean Nick Saban will give up the commitments of 5-Star, Arch Manning or 4-Star Eli Holstein. In fact the head of Tide would have made a commitment to both, though this will never happen. The two best shooters will not choose one school.

Some fans thought Saban might be a slow Holstein, preferring to land with Manning. Saban may prefer Manning, but, according to Alabama football insiders, Saban and Bill O’Brien are selling Holstein’s potential to become an elite college defender. It is believed that Holstein has the green light to commit as soon as he is ready.

Like Saban, none of the young men seem to be in a hurry. Their decision-making deadlines may last until the end of the summer. When Holstein visited Tuscaloosa three times this spring, including at an A-Day match, some Tide fans hoped a decision would be inevitable. So far, everything is calm.

It is impossible to penetrate the minds of these young people. Basically, we can only hope for the recruitment of former elite QB recruits. While Manning and Holstein are reluctant to compete with each other, competition with current college staff, rather than in initial roles, is unlikely to be a deterrent.

On Saturday afternoon, Holstein considered well who could become his Crimson Tide competition. What he saw from Jalen Milro and Ty Simpson must have struck him.

In the A-Day game Milro was the most productive and efficient QB. His QB rating was higher than Bryce Young’s rating. Unlike Young, Milro did his job against defending the second division of Tide. Milro stood out enough to show that he could also work well against the defense of the first Tide unit. His figures for Day A were 11 by 23 by 149 yards, with one touchdown throw and one interception. He also ran eight times for 32 yards. The touchdown throw was a perfectly accurate shot by Christian Lear from 52 yards.

Milro requires playing experience other than stripping responsibilities, but on Saturday he looked like a potential QB champion. This may be true only in the 2022 season, when the injury will make it his starting point.

Freshman Ty Simpson also looked good in the A-Day game. Like Milro, Simpson is a real QB with a double threat, able to move the ball with his feet and hands. He made five passes in 12 attempts and added 18 yards. The completion rate of all three Tide QBs decreased due to falls.

Alabama Football’s biggest need in 2023 is not in QB

Alabama will get a defender in each signing class. It would be great to get Eli Holstein or Arch Manning, but Crimson Tide would be fine without signing either. Other than injuries or transfers, Tide already has guys with whom he can win the championship over the next three to four seasons. Because of this the Crimson Tide will be fine with anyone signing in QB in class ‘23.

After the A-Day game a few fans talked about growing fast to become QB in season 22. Fans who might like a little QB controversy will be disappointed. Jalen Milro is firmly entrenched as Quarterback № 2 Crimson Tide.
