North Carolina High School students graduating this spring can receive free tuition at Wake Technical Community College next fall.
The college offers scholarships in addition to public ones Longleaf Commitment grants covering training and fees for low-income students at any of North Carolina’s 58 community colleges.
Wake Tech will cover tuition and fees not yet paid by the Pell Student Grant, Longleaf Commitment Grant, or other government funds. Students will still have to pay for textbooks.
The programs aim to increase the number of applicants and make obtaining a higher or professional qualification more accessible and accessible to prepare students for the job that the state needs.
“The last two years have been particularly challenging for high school graduates and their families,” Wake Tech President Dr. Scott Rales said in a statement. “Now that they are planning to get an education after high school, they are facing rising costs for gas and other costs. We don’t want the cost of college to be an obstacle for anyone in our community to achieve their dream of college ”.
Who is eligible for free tuition?
All North Carolina residents who graduated from high school in 2022, earned a GED, graduated from an adult high school diploma, or are studying at home are eligible for the money. They must be the first students of the college, but those enrolled in the Career and College Promise and Early / Middle College programs are qualified.
Students who completed high school requirements in December 2021 or January 2022 are also eligible.
Students must also pass FAFSA 2022-23 and enroll for a minimum of six credit hours per semester beginning in the fall of 2022.
More than 1,400 students at Wake Tech and more than 11,000 at public colleges across the state received tuition assistance as part of the Longleaf Commitment program last academic year. In November, the program was expanded
Longleaf grants cover tuition and fees for up to two years depending on family income. The program was expanded in November to include high school graduates in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 and excessive funding.
