OXFORD, NC — Investigators are working to identify a badly decomposed body found by a Granville County man in a ditch along a rural road in Oxford on Thursday.

Sheriff Robert Fountain said a resident picking up trash made the discovery around 3 p.m. Thursday near 6410 Cornwall Road. The resident immediately called the Granville County Sheriff’s Office.

Fountain said the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is assisting.

The body, believed to be a white or Hispanic adult, has visible tattoos and other identifying marks.

The Granville County Sheriff’s Office has investigated several missing persons reports in recent months, the sheriff said. He believes that the body could have been decomposing sometime since September or October.

“We think we know who it is, but we want to make sure we have confirmation before we put anything concrete out there,” Fontan said. “We would ask the residents of the area to stay away so we can allow people to work.”

The sheriff said it was unclear if the man suffered any traumatic injuries. A full autopsy will be performed.

“They’re somebody’s kids,” Fontan said. “We want to make sure we take care of them and give closure to the family that may have been looking for this person.
