DURHAM, NC (WNCN) — Durham Water Services was dealing with a sewer overflow Friday afternoon.

On Friday morning, Durham Water Department officials received a report of an overflowing manhole at 9:49 a.m. in the 1900 block of Birmingham Avenue near North Duke Street.

Officials said about 8,550 gallons of untreated sewage entered the unnamed area of ​​Ellerb Creek. Crews were able to dam the creek downstream, pump untreated sewage back into the sewer system and flush the creek.

The spill was contained at 12:40 p.m. Crews saw no danger to people, property or the environment.

As required by law, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Water Resources was notified of the spill.

Durham City Council is reminding its residents that only water, human waste and toilet paper should go down the sewer system.
