Less than a month after owners of the 2020-2022 Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride. urged not to park their cars inside due to the risk of fire, a similar recall has been issued for certain Kia Sorento and Kia Sportage models.

The new recall notice indicates that foreign matter and moisture on the hitch module circuit board could cause a short circuit. This could potentially cause the hitch module to catch fire.

The hitch accessory was supplied by Mobis Parts America. Kia’s North American safety department has identified several fires related to the towbar harness, including in the 2016 Sorento. This comes amid three confirmed fires in Canada involving Kia Telluride models equipped with the same hitch.

This latest recall involves 2016-2022 Kia Sorento models manufactured between October 27, 2014 and September 12, 2022, and 2021-2023 Kia Sorento Hybrid models manufactured between September 2, 2020 and August 31, 2022. and 2017-2022. Kia Sportage models built between December 10, 2015 and December 7, 2021. The most recent recall involved 70,887 vehicles.

Kia is still working to resolve the issue and is urging owners of affected vehicles to park on the street and away from buildings until the recall repairs are completed. Kia also advised its dealers not to sell the towbar harness and to return all unsold harnesses to Kia America. Dealers will be notified of the recall on November 9, 2022, and owners on November 14, 2022.
