Lexus introduced IP update in 2020, but the fate of the RC coupe, which debuted nearly a decade ago at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2013, was silenced by radio.

This is starting to change as Toyota Racing Development President David Wilson has suggested that the new RC will be in a couple of years and will draw inspiration from the Toyota GR GT3 concept, which debuted earlier this year.

Talking to Car and driver, Wilson said the current RC F GT3 was designed as an “after plan” and they quickly learned it was “not the way you release the GT3 car to market”. It’s not such a subtle hint that next-generation racing cars and RCs will be developed together.

Although Wilson was careful with his words, he told the publication that “it is safe enough to connect the dots and assume that [the GR GT3 concept] could be the forerunner of the next global GT3 car for Lexus ”. A prototype of the GR GT3 concept should be completed by the end of the year, and Wilson hinted that a proper race car could appear “hopefully in a couple of years”. It will probably be introduced at about the same time as the reworked RC.

When The GR GT3 concept Toyota Gazoo Racing, which debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show last month, said it intends to “use feedback and technology enhanced by participating in various motorsport events to develop both the GT3 and production cars.” They also hinted at sustainability, and this seems to indicate an electrified transmission.
