Caught on camera: Man fights thieves in Louisiana, takes matters into his own hands
OK KATHY THANK YOU. CAR THEFT IS A CRIME THAT PEOPLE ALL OVER THE CITY ARE COMMITTING TO. OVER 4,000 CARS WERE STOLEN IN THIS CITY LAST YEAR AND OVER 4,000 CARS WERE STOLEN IN 2022, 4,011 TO BE EXACT, A GROWTH OF MORE THAN 35% IN 2022. THIS CRIME IS TAKEN SERIOUSLY. AND ON CHRISTMAS, ONE MAN TRIED AND TRIED TO TAKE MATTER INTO HIS HANDS. THAT’S WHY THE VIDEO WE’RE GOING TO SHOW YOU NOW IS VERY SERIOUS. AS WDSU ANCOR TRAVERS REPORTS, EXPERTS SAY NEVER ATTEMPT TO INTERVENTION ON YOUR OWN. THIS MAN WE DON’T KNOW IS JUST DELIVERING A NEIGHBOR’S PRESENT FOR CHRISTMAS IN THE UPPER YEAR. YOU SEE HIM WALKING HOME WITH A GIFT IN HIS HAND. HE LEFT HIS RED SUV AT THE DRIVEWAY, TELLS WDSU NEWS HE EXPECTED IT TO TAKE ABOUT 60 SECONDS TO DELIVER. GADDY A silver SUV pulls two men into it. ONE GET OUT AND THEN GET BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL OF A RED TRUCK. THE VICTIM SEES WHAT IS HAPPENING AND ACTS. AT FIRST, STAND IN FRONT OF THE CAR. THEN AGAIN, PREVENTING THE DRIVER FROM ESCAPE. HE THROWS THE GIFT INTO THE CAR. HE IS US. IT WAS A POT OF GUMBO AND THEN I CLIMBED ON TOP, REACHED THROUGH THE HATCH TO TRY TO GET THE SUSPECT OUT. SECONDS LATER HE REMOVES THE MAN’S JACKET AND THE SUSPECT EXITS THE VEHICLE, GETTING BACK IN THE SILVER VEHICLE AND THEN DRIVING. YOUR ADRENALINE RUNS, BUT YOU NEED TO THINK AGAIN. MOST OF THESE PEOPLE ARE ARMED. FORMER NOPD AND SECURITY EXPERT MICHAEL SOON SAYS THE CITY HAS PEOPLE BEING SAFE FROM CRIME. BUT NEVER, EVER, YOU SHOULD TAKE IT INTO YOUR HANDS. THIS IS DANGEROUS FOR YOU AND EVERYONE ELSE INVOLVED IN THIS SITUATION. GET AS MUCH INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE. TRY AND GET A GOOD DESCRIPTION OF THE CRIMINALS AND GET THEM AGAINST THE PROPERTY. YOU CAN BE REPLACED. THE VICTIM, WHO AGAIN WISHES TO BE IDENTIFIED, TELLS US HE HAS LIVED IN NEW ORLEANS FOR OVER 50 YEARS. AND HE SAYS HE’S SICK OF CRIME IN THE CITY. THE VICTIM ALSO SAYS IN A WRITTEN STATEMENT SUBMITTED TO WDSU THAT I WAS ALMOST HIT TWICE, I REACTED ON INSTINCT TO PROTECT MYSELF AND MY PROPERTY. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IN THIS SITUATION? LOOKING BACK, BETTER DECISIONS COULD HAVE BEEN MADE. BUT I AM BORED OF THE CRIME IN OUR CITY. WE, OUR POLICE AND MUNICIPAL AUTHORITIES ARE DOING WHAT IS NECESSARY TO PROTECT OUR CITIZENS. I’M GIVING A REPORT UPTOWN, I’M TRAVERS MACKEL WDSU NEWS. THE VICTIM FILED A COMPLAINT TO THE POLICE
Caught on camera: Man fights thieves in Louisiana, takes matters into his own hands
More than 4,000 cars were stolen in New Orleans last year. The police take car theft seriously, and on Christmas Day one man became a victim and tried to take matters into his own hands. The victim – sister station WDSU News is not identifying – was simply giving a gift to a neighbor for Christmas. He left his red SUV running while he delivered the gift, telling sister station WDSU News he expected it to take just 60 seconds to deliver. That’s when this silver SUV pulls up with two men inside and one gets out and gets behind the wheel of the victim’s red SUV. The victim then throws his gift into the car — he said it’s a pot of gumbo — and climbs up, reaching through the hatch to try to knock out the suspect. Seconds later, he takes out the thief’s jacket and the suspect gets out of the car, gets into another car, and they drive off. The victim gave a statement to sister station WDSU: “I was nearly run over twice and I reacted instinctively to protect myself and my property. What would you do in this situation? In retrospect, I could have made better decisions, but I am fed up with the crime in our city. We expect our police and municipal authorities to do whatever is necessary to protect citizens.” Watch the video above for the full story.
