CAPE LOOKOUT, NC (WTVD) — The mysterious sea creatures have been found on the North Carolina coast in mid-July are no longer a mystery.

Researchers at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences identified the creatures as bristleworms, or polychaete worms, belonging to the Amphinomidae family. This family of creatures includes fireworms and sea mice.

The creatures are known as bristle worms because of the spines that cover the toxin, known as setae. These bristles cover the worm’s body and make it potentially dangerous to humans. Toxins in pinworms can cause significant skin irritation.

Worms can grow on objects floating in the open ocean. In this case, they were on a coconut that eventually made it to the North Carolina coast.
