The Find My app has long been part of the Apple ecosystem. The app will help you find missing devices even if they don’t have Wi-Fi or cellular. It works using your device’s Bluetooth signals, which nearby iPhones, iPads and Macs can pick up to transmit a signal to you.

Although Find My is useful, it can be used by scammers and stalkers to find people. All they need to do is leave the AirTag on someone else’s face and follow the signal later. Apple has introduced security updates to address this issue. Click or click here to get our report.

IOS 15 has alerted you with “Notify when left behind” to notify you when you’ve been disconnected from Apple devices. This is different from Find My alerts, as we will explain below.

Anything to forget?

We are human and we forget. You can take off your AirPods headphones to hear the cashier at the coffee shop and then leave them at the counter when you grab a drink. You can leave your iPad on charge nearby at the library and get out without it.

Thanks to the Apple Notify When Left Behind feature, you will receive a warning if you leave a supported Apple device, AirTag or Find My Network in an unknown location.

Apple constantly keeps track of where your devices are, and lets you know if you’ve been disconnected from them. Unlike the Find My feature, you will be automatically alerted after setting up your devices.

The feature works on iPhone with iOS 15 or later, iPad with iPadOS 15 or later, Mac with Apple Silicon and macOS Monterey 12 or later, and with Find My items. For AirPods Pro, AirPods Max and AirPods (3rd generation) you will need an iPhone 12 or later to get a warning when you leave them.

How to set up notification when left behind

The “Notify if left” feature is in the “Find mine” program and is configured the same on each Apple device:

  • Open up Find mine app and then tap Devices or items.
  • Click on the device.
  • Click Report when left behind under Notifications.
  • Switch Report when left behind on.
  • Click Done.

When you leave your Apple device, you will receive a notification that your device is left on any of your other connected Apple devices, as well as its location. Then click on the notification Keep going to open Find mine application.

Setting up exceptions

You can set up known places to avoid receiving alerts when you don’t need them:

  • Open up Find mine app and then tap Devices or items.
  • Click on the device.
  • Click Report when left behind under Notifications.
  • Click Home or New location and set a location where you will not receive notifications when you leave this device. For example, you can add your home, friend’s home, or your workplace to this list.
