REGINA, SASK. – Avena Foods Ltd., a Canadian grain and oat mover, has established an advisory group to review the company’s sustainability initiatives, present program proposals and identify new opportunities.

“The primary goal of this group is to increase the rigor and legitimacy of Avena’s sustainability program,” said group co-chair Margaret Hughes, vice president of sales and marketing for Avena Foods. “We hope to do this by developing value chain partnerships, acknowledging the value that all participants bring to sustainability initiatives. and developing a shared understanding and approach to sustainability on the Canadian Prairies – from farm to processing to customer.”

Another co-chair is Mike Halle, director of purchasing for Avena. Other members of the group are: Jean-Marc Bertrand, Director of Procurement, Danone Canada; Todd DeKrieger, Ph.D., North American Regional Manager, Nestle Agriculture Sustainability Group; Lynelle Olson, farmer and agronomist at Seed Source and Caliber Seed Services; Julia Person, Sustainability Manager at Bob’s Red Mill; Lana Shaw, Research Manager, Southeast Research Farm; and Marcus Weber, Director of Implementation and Technology for Field to Market Canada.
