A 15-year-old girl died after a pickup truck hit her while she was crossing the road at Water Banks, several news agencies reported.

The teenager was visiting the village barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina when the disaster occurred on Saturday, March 12, according to a press release from the city of Nags Head.

Around 7:30 p.m., officials said the girl was trying to run across the highway. It is reported that then she was run over by a Chevrolet Colorado driver.

Emergency resuscitation officers out of duty performed CPR on the girl, who was then taken to Water Banks Hospital. She later died, officials said.

The teenager, who was not mentioned in the city news release, was from the European country of Albania.

Representatives of Negs Head said the accident occurred on the South Croatia Highway, also called US Highway 158.

“While the incident is still being investigated, neither speed nor alcohol are factors in the accident,” the city said. “The driver is not expected to be charged.”
