The college football season is about a month away.
There is NO player movement during the offseason conference realignment plans, there is a lot of hype surrounding the 2022 season.
And there’s a lot of optimism in Iowa City.
Iowa football finished 10-4 last season, earning a trip to the 2021 Big Ten Championship and a berth in the Citrus Bowl. The Hawkeyes also return a lot of starters on both sides of the ball.
Here’s an overview of Iowa’s football schedule, opponents, TV information and more ahead of the 2022 season:
A look at Iowa’s 2022 football schedule
Iowa vs. South Dakota State
If: Saturday, September 3rd, 11am CT
Where: Iowa City

Last meeting: The first meeting between the teams
Iowa opens its season with an FCS powerhouse. The Jackrabbits have reached the FCS playoffs in 10 straight seasons, most notably appearing in the 2020 national championship game. Follow up running back Isaiah Davis and defender Mark Granovsky. Davis rushed for 701 yards and seven touchdowns (7.4 yards per carry) in just seven games last season. Granowski redshirted last year due to injury, but was the Missouri Valley Conference’s top offensive player as a freshman in 2020.
Iowa vs. Iowa State
If: 3:00pm CT on Saturday, September 10th
Where: Iowa City

Last meeting: Iowa won 27-17 in 2021. The Hawkeyes have a 46-22 series advantage.
Can the Hawkeyes win seven in a row against the Cyclones? Or is this the year Matt Campbell gets his first Cy-Hawk win? Iowa State will trot Hunter Deckers as the presumptive starting quarterback as Brock Purdy’s replacement. Cyclones return Will McDonald IV, also the program’s all-time sack leader.
Iowa vs. Nevada

Where: Iowa City

Last meeting: The first meeting between the teams
Ken Wilson’s fourth game as Nevada’s head coach will be in Iowa City. With the retirement of star quarterback Carson Strong, the question of who the Wolfpack will use at quarterback remains up in the air. Do all tailback Toa Taua returns and had over 1,000 yards from scrimmage last season.

Iowa at Rutgers
If: In advance on Saturday, September 24
Where: Piscataway, New Jersey
How to watch/listen: It is determined
Last meeting: Iowa went 30-0 in 2019
The Hawkeyes’ first road game of the 2022 season is Sept. 24. Rutgers is there still looking for its first win over Iowa. The Scarlet Knights were quite competitive last season, going 5-8. Rutgers had a career-high seven points against Iowa in two games.

Iowa vs. Michigan
If: Reported on Saturday, October 1
Where: Iowa City
How to watch/listen: It is determined
Last meeting: Michigan went 42-3 in the 2021 Big Ten Championship
The last time these two teams faced each other, it wasn’t close. And it’s a game the Hawkeyes and their fans would like to forget. Here’s one note of optimism: Iowa has won its last four games against Michigan inside Kinnick Stadium, including a 14-13 win in 2016.
Iowa at Illinois

Where: Champaign, Illinois

Last meeting: Iowa won 33-23 in 2021
The Hawkeyes have won 13 of their last 14 meetings between these two teams and it wasn’t that close. Iowa has scored 33 points or more in four of its last five meetings, including a 63-0 shutout in 2018. If there’s a bright spot on head coach Brett Bielema’s team, it’s defense; last season, the Illini held opponents to just 21.9 points per game, which ranked sixth in the Big Ten last year, just behind Iowa.

Iowa at Ohio State
If: Reported on Saturday, October 22
Where: Columbus, Ohio
How to watch/listen: It is determined
Last meeting: In 2017, Iowa won 55-24
It’s been a while since these teams met, but the last meeting was Hawkeye fans will surely remember. Other than that, however, Iowa struggled against Ohio State. The Buckeyes have won 13 of the last 15 meetings dating back to 1992 and boast a 46-15-3 all-time series advantage. Ohio State is led by CJ Straud, preseason Heisman Trophy hopeful who threw for 4,435 yards and 44 touchdowns as a redshirt freshman in 2021.

Iowa vs. Northwestern

Where: Iowa City

Last meeting: Iowa went 17-12 in 2021
Iowa’s Homecoming game is against an opponent the Hawkeyes have struggled with of late. Northwestern has won four of the last six meetings between these two schools. Running back Evan Hull (1,273 yards from scrimmage, nine total touchdowns) is back after earning All-Big Ten honorable mention honors last season, but there are still plenty of questions about the offense as a whole.

Iowa at Purdue
If: Warning on Saturday, November 5
Where: West Lafayette, Indiana
How to watch/listen: It is determined
Last meeting: Purdue went 24-7 in 2021
Purdue’s Jeff Brohm offense always seems to give Iowa’s defense a shot. And now two former Hawkeye receivers should help the Boilermakers offense in 2022; Tyrone Tracy Jr and Charlie Jones both transferred to Purdue it’s the offseason. Purdue has won four of its last five games, including two at West Lafayette.

Iowa vs. Wisconsin
If: In advance on Saturday, November 12
Where: Iowa City
How to watch/listen: It is determined
Last meeting: In 2021, Wisconsin went 27-7
The last time Wisconsin came to Kinnick Stadium, Iowa was in business. But this was not always the case in recent history. Since 2010 The Badgers have won eight of 10 meetings with the Hawkeyes. Brelon Allen will be a man to watch in the Badger backfield this season. He had 1,268 yards and 12 scores as a freshman last year.

Iowa at Minnesota

Where: Minneapolis

Last meeting: Iowa won 27-22 in 2021
Battle for Floyd of Rosedale will be held in Minnesota this year. So far, Floyd has spent the last seven seasons in Iowa City. Iowa has won four of its last five in Minneapolis, including a 35-7 victory in 2020 when led to Kirk Ferentz’s infamous quote: “Thought we’d take Floyd with us and leave the timeouts here.”
Iowa vs. Nebraska
If: Friday, November 25, 3:00pm CT
Where: Iowa City

Last meeting: Iowa won 28-21 in 2021
In the regular season finale, Iowa has a chance to win its eighth straight game against Nebraska, led by fifth-year coach Scott Frost. The last four contests have been close, with the Hawkeyes winning each contest by an average of 4.75 points — but that’s an area where Nebraska has struggled of late. Since 2018, the Huskers have lost 18 games by seven points or less and won just five. Iowa overcame a 21-6 deficit last season, scoring 22 unanswered points en route to victory at Memorial Stadium. Defender Casey Thompson transferred from Texas to Nebraska this offseason, giving Frost proven talent under center.
