CHARLOTTE, NC (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Newly released 911 calls paint a clearer picture of what happened the night the suspect opened fire The Mecklenburg County park ranger is on the job.
The shooting happened Nov. 27 at the Friendship Sportsplex on Cindy Lane. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says the suspect, 36-year-old Tyson Corpening, is also responsible for another incident on Dec. 5 when a rock smashed a window at the Marisetta Carey Child Development Center.
A search warrant for Corpening revealed that he allegedly left a note at each scene, written on similar paper and in similar handwriting. CMPD officers said a note at the daycare said the children would be killed within 24 hours. It also mentioned the killing of minorities and referenced a message left during the incident at the Friendship Sportsplex.
According to a recent 911 call, Patrick Behringer, 35, the injured park ranger, told emergency responders a note the suspect had left that said “something about getting rid of the n******.”
The man shot Behringer in the leg, and paramedics took the man to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“I’m a park ranger in Mecklenburg County. The guy came up, shot me in the leg, dropped the note and ran away,” Beringer said during the call.
Behringer also noted that the suspect was wearing a hat on his head and had a bandana covering his mouth.
After a rock smashed a kindergarten window, CMPD officials held a press conference saying they knew the incidents were connected, but wouldn’t go into details about how.
“Proximity is part of it, but just the totality of the circumstances and some of the evidence that’s in there, we believe they’re connected,” Maj. Melanie Paulin said at a Dec. 5 conference call.
The search warrant also revealed that the FBI found a report in Florida that matched details recorded in the suspect’s notes. CMPD said they used information provided by the FBI to search Charlotte police databases. That’s when they found a report in which Corpening described receiving a note detailing notes found at the crime scene on Nov. 27 and Dec. 5, they said.
However, no information has been released as to why Corpening might have targeted Barringer or Marisella Carey’s daycare.
Corpening is being held in the Mecklenburg County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to murder, attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, criminal damage to property, two counts of ethnic intimidation and threatening mass violence on school property.
