The study is co-authored with an associate professor at the NC State College of Education Anna Egalit emphasizing the impact of principals on student achievement, was selected as one of the winners of the American Association for Educational Research (AERA) Competition in 2022, Division H. The award was presented to Egolita and her co-authors, Jason Grissom of Vanderbilt University and Constance Lindsey of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, for “How Principals Influence Students and Schools: A Systematic Synthesis of Two Decades of Research” which was funded by a $ 463,000 grant from the Wallace Foundation. The report serves as an update to the Wallace Foundation’s 2004 report “How Leadership Affects Student Learning,” which found that school leadership ranks second after classroom instruction in influencing student learning.
An updated study found that exposure the effective principle is stronger and broader than beforet and shows that replacing a director below average with above average is expected to increase students ’learning of reading and math by about three additional months.
This suggests that educating high-quality school leaders can bring one of the highest returns on investment in K-12 education, Egolit said.
“It was an important finding, so it’s very interesting that others felt the same way. We are delighted that our report was chosen for this award, ”Egolite said. “At the time of writing this synthesis of research on school principals, analyzing the relationship between school leadership, student achievement and other outcomes in the US, the findings certainly seemed important to us, but we could not predict whether they would be widespread or not. By writing a report on applied research, our goal was to create something relevant, qualitative and have a broad impact on practice and policy. ”
Since its first publication in February 2021, “How Principals Affect Students and Schools” has had a significant impact on business.
March 2021 a letter from the Wallace Foundation to the U.S. Department of Education called for recognition of the role played by principals in efforts to rebuild schools after the closure of COVID-19, citing the report as a basis for their recommendations. The strategy paper, published by the Department of Education later that year, responded to the recommendations set out in the letter, Egolit said.
The change in the definition of the term “teacher” of the US Department of Education, which includes principals and other school principals, also influenced Letter for July 2021 Egolite said he was directly quoting the report.
Egalite and her co-authors also shared a study with President Joe Biden’s team on transition education after receiving a request from team leader Linda Darling-Hammond. In addition, a summary of the results was included in documents prepared for the U.S. Senate HELP Committee (Health, Education, Employment and Retirement) in connection with the approval hearings for Education Minister Miguel Cardona.
“We believe that these examples of our report, which stimulate policy change at the federal level, are consistent with the highest marks, in our opinion, in importance and significance,” Egalit said.
The report was celebrated in August 2021 Award for Product of Cooperation Policy in Education in 2021 because of its “direct evidence of influence,” a clear focus on dissemination among key stakeholders at the state and district levels, and because it has already influenced the discourse around investing in school improvement.
As of October 2021, the report had been downloaded by nearly 30,000 people Wallace Foundation website while the Wallace Foundation blog post the study’s findings were number one on last year’s review views.
