WASHINGTON, DC (WTVD) – The historical confrontation has ended saturday when Representative of the Republican Party of California, Kevin McCarthy, received the position of speaker after 15 rounds of voting.

Senior political analyst Mitch Kokai said the delay is partly due to the split in the Republican Party.

“Most of them were willing to accept Kevin McCarthy as the new speaker, but there were some rejections and enough rejections that it was easy for them to stick together for at least a while,” Kokai said.

20 Those who opposed McCarthy were critical of the way Washington did business.

“What they were really looking for was a change in how the process was going to happen, with invoices going to be handled on the floor, how things were going to be done more openly, more transparently than behind closed doors and just a few people making decisions,” Kokai said. .

He added that very few cases in the US House of Representatives concern all members.

“Most of this is done through committees, where the committee chairs are the power agents who decide what happens, and then senior management decides which bills go forward and which don’t,” Kokai said. “And there were a lot of members of that Republican group who said, ‘Look, this is our opportunity to change this.’

Kokay said almost all Republicans have to be on board to pass something and send it to the Senate, with Democrats still in control of the Senate and Joe Biden in the White House.

“I think Republicans can approach this session in two ways,” Kokai said. “If they want to get legislation passed in the Senate, passed by the Senate and signed by President Biden, it has to be legislation that’s really not very conservative or Republican-only. be the kind of thing around which both parties can easily unite. I think the other way they can approach this session is our opportunity to tell the American people what the Republicans would do if they also controlled the Senate and also controlled the White House.”

While Kokai said it doesn’t delay anything in terms of actual legislation, what it does delay is some behind-the-scenes work, such as new members moving forward with recruiting staff and setting up their office.

While experienced Democrats have played an important role recently, Kokay said now that control of the House has shifted to the GOP, experienced Republicans will have an important role in Congress, such as Rep. Richard Hudson, N.C., who helped deter alabama congressman.

“I think another person who won … is Dan Bishop,” Kokai said. “He actually got a reputation because he was not only one of the people who didn’t support it, but he was one of the people who wanted to talk about it. Now people know he’s one of those people who is willing to stand up to his party if he doesn’t think they’re doing things the way they should be done in Congress.”
