Earlier this month, Mercedes became the first in the world to be introduced four-cylinder SL 43, a two-seater luxury roadster equipped with an electric turbocharger. And now the same technology has been introduced in the new sedan and station wagon Mercedes-AMG C43 4Matic 2023, although in a sharp turn the C-Class is much more powerful than its glamorous sister.

Both cars use essentially the same engine with the code M139l, 2.0-liter in-line four, equipped with 48 V electricity, which allows AMG engineers to adapt similar technology to the electric turbocharger, which the company’s F1 team currently running on his Grand Prix cars. Equipment 48 B also means that both cars receive a light hybrid aid, a combined starter generator that gives an increase of 14 liters.

But while the SL gas engine develops 376 hp. (381 hp) at 6750 rpm, The C 43 develops 402 hp (408 PS) at the same speed. The C43 also limits double torque, generating 367 lb-ft (500 Nm) at 5,000 rpm, while Mercedes-AMG cites 354 lb-ft (480 Nm) at 3250-5000 rpm.

4Matic All-wheel drive is a must

Both cars transmit their power through a nine-speed automatic transmission with a wet clutch instead of a torque converter, but from there only the rear SL wheels can handle horsepower. As its name suggests C 43 4Matic is all-wheel drive and it helps it accelerate to 100 km / h in 4.6 seconds, which is three tenths faster than the SL 43.

It’s interesting to compare the C 43 to its sibling SL, but more relevant is how the four-seater 43 compares to its BMW M340i xDrive and Audi S4 rivals. Both of these cars are equipped with 3.0-liter turbocharged sixes (native to BMW, see Audi) and all-wheel drive like the AMG, although rear-wheel drive M340i is also available. BMW develops 382 hp (387 hp) in the North American trim (369 hp / 374 hp in Europe) and accelerates to 60 mph (97 km / h) in 4.4 seconds, while the American Audi The S4 delivers a less impressive 349 hp. (354 PS), but reaches 60 mph just the same.

Square tubes, sports seats and data logger AMG Track Pace

To let other drivers know that you collect more than 400 horses, even if you can’t let them jump, the C 43 has the branded AMG Panamericana grille, a more aggressive bumper than conventional C-Class models with chrome trim, AMG sills, a rear diffuser apron (same functionality as on my 2004 CR-V) and two pairs of exhaust pipes. Eagle eyes also notice the “Turbo Electrified” icon on the front wings. Standard wheels are a relatively small 18 inches in diameter, but the 19s and 20s are on the list of options ready to save your street blush if you don’t save money.

Moving inside, you get black AMG seats upholstered in Merc’s Artico faux leather and microfiber, as well as red irons and red seat belts. They are joined by a flat-bottomed steering wheel with controllers for driving modes AMG Dynamic Select, a dashboard, again covered with Artico, and infotainment system MBUX which has some AMG-specific displays and features, including the AMG Track Pace data logger, which not only measures lap time but also speed, acceleration, angle of rotation and brake pedal operation. Well, at least I didn’t go down without explaining myself first.

Four-wheel steering and adaptive shock absorbers are standard

Escape from daily traffic jams to find decent roads, and you can take advantage of the tricks of the C 43 chassis, which include AMG-specific steel springs paired with standard adaptive shock absorbers, and an all-wheel drive system that is strongly rear-mounted. 31:69 front and rear, but does not have the ability to become only rear-wheel drive as on the AMG E63. And with a steering rack with variable geometry at the front and rear-wheel steering installed for the first time, the C43 should feel quite agile when cornering.

The question is how it will sound, and whether it will sound exciting enough (and luxurious) if it will competitors still own the six-cylinder power plants? AMG says that the adaptive exhaust system, which can change its sound depending on the selected driving mode, engine speed and engine load, provides a “suitable acoustic background” for the C 43. But owners who want more can pay for the AMG Real sound system Performance Sound with an ironic title that captures engine noise in the exhaust system and electronically sends it to the cabin.

How much does it cost and does the car come to the US?

Prices for C 43 sedan and station wagon will be announced when it goes on sale later this year, but is expected to cost about $ 55,000. Not surprisingly, the cargo luger option is again missing from the US lineup. While Canada got the old model, Mercedes decided not to sell it in America.

AMG’s move to four-cylinder power will scare you away from buying the C 43 ahead of one of its six-cylinder competitors, and now we know what the AMG children’s sedan looks like, what do you want to see from the future C63? Leave a comment and let us know.
