The $249,000 Lucid Air Sapphire has over 1,200 HP and runs the 1/4 mile in under 9 seconds

Not happy with the resolution Tesla Model S plaid spotlight, Lucid unveiled the new Air Sapphire flagship at Monterey Auto Week.

The Bright air The Sapphire has been in development for several years and is the first model in Lucid’s newly launched Sapphire sub-brand of high performance.

Like the Model S Plaid, the Lucid Air Sapphire has a three-motor drivetrain consisting of two motors on the rear axle and one motor on the front axle. While the sold-out Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance has 1,111 hp and the Grand Touring Performance is rated at 1,050 hp, the Air Sapphire has more than 1,200 hp, although Lucid has yet to release a specific figure. It says the Air Sapphire is the most powerful sedan in the world.

Adding a third electric motor allows air Sapphire accelerates to 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than 2 seconds, sprints from zero to 100 mph (160 km/h) in less than 4 seconds, and runs the quarter mile in less than 9 seconds. Lucid notes that these numbers are achievable without any lengthy pre-treatment procedures.

Many other upgrades were made to the Air Sapphire. For example, it comes with larger carbon-ceramic brakes as standard (unlike the Model S Plaid), and has stiffer front and rear springs, unique shock settings, stiffer bushings, and unique tuning for ABS, traction control, stability control and electronic power steering. The car has also been fitted with new 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels, shod in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires measuring 265/35 up front and 295/30 rear. Carbon fiber aero discs are available.

Lucid is also touting the advanced torque vectoring capabilities of its new flagship. It says the rear electric motors can deliver torque to the wheels in opposite directions to help with cornering or straight-line stability. In tight turns, the system can apply regenerative braking to the inside wheel while supplying power to the outside, which also improves rotation.

A number of visual changes have also been made to the car. For example, it has a new carbon fiber rear spoiler for increased downforce and is also available in a new shade called Sapphire Blue.

Inside, there are new 18-way power sport seats with greater bolstering and black leather trim with black alcantara and sapphire blue contrast stitching. The headrests are also embossed with the Lucid Gear logo, while the steering wheel and roof top are trimmed in Alcantara. The infotainment screen and digital dashboard also have unique graphics.

It’s clear promises high-end Sapphire variants for all its future models. The Air Sapphire will be produced in limited quantities, starting at $249,000 in the US and $325,000 in Canada. Reservations will be available from August 23, with first deliveries scheduled for next year.
