The startup Our Next Energy (ONE) from Michigan is on a mission to provide cheap batteries that move electric cars far beyond each charge, and in the last few months this has caused severe waves in space. Demonstrating last year a range of 752 miles (1,210 km) for the Gemini battery, the company has now raised millions of new funding, looking for a place for its first battery plant in the US, and production will begin later this year.
To consider the ambitions of the ONE, the Tesla Model S has an EPA rating of 405 miles (651 km) using a battery with a capacity of about 100 kW / h. Despite Tesla’s successes and the growing popularity of electric vehicles, concerns about charging infrastructure and charging distances remain very real for potential buyers, and advances in battery technology will play an important role in addressing these issues.
ONE hopes to play a significant role in this future with its Gemini battery technology, currently an experimental device with a capacity of 203.7 kW / h and a claimed energy density of 416 W / L. In December, the company upgraded the Tesla Model S, called the Gemini 001, a battery for real-world road tests to show what it’s capable of.
This was followed by a 752-mile ride with an average speed of 55 mph (88.51 km / h), and the company also passed the Gemini 001 to a third party for further testing, where it actually ran 882 miles (1419 km / h). ). It’s unclear what impact this larger battery will have on other aspects of the Model S’s performance (or how much such a car will cost), but the achievement is impressive.

“We want to speed up the adoption of electric vehicles by eliminating the concerns that are holding back most consumers today,” said Mujib Ijaz, founder and CEO of ONE. “We are now focused on transforming this battery-proof concept into a new product called GeminiTM that will allow you to travel long distances on a single charge while increasing cost and safety using sustainable materials.”
To continue this effort, the company has just raised $ 65 million in a new round of funding led by BMW i Ventures. He also announced that he has signed contracts with four customers amounting to 25 GWh of energy storage capacity to be fulfilled over the next five years. The company says it equals 300,000 batteries for electric vehicles.
He has now begun the process of evaluating sites for his first battery plant in the United States, where in 2022 production of the first product, a smaller battery pack called Aries, will begin. He expects to demonstrate a production prototype of Gemini in 2023.
