While new cases of COVID-19 and hospitalizations continue to fall, more than 2,000 Americans still die every day from COVID-19. There are now an average of 151,056 new cases of COVID-19 in the U.S., according to Johns Hopkins University. This is a drop of 44% since last week. New COVID-19 cases fell to less than a fifth from a peak of more than 800,000 cases a day a month ago. And for the first time since Christmas in the U.S. on Friday, there were fewer than 200,000 new cases of COVID-19 a day. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the number of hospitalizations with COVID-19 is also declining: 82,842 patients with COVID-19 are currently hospitalized. This is 23% less than last week. But more than 2,000 Americans still die every day from COVID-19, according to the JHU. Over the past week, an average of 2,306 Americans have succumbed to the disease each day. New deaths from COVID-19 often occur a few weeks after infection, making death lagging behind. While the majority of Americans – 64% – have been fully vaccinated, only 28% – according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have received a buteral dose. And the rate of new vaccinations and additional vaccinations has dropped to the slowest ever. In December, the risk of getting tested positive for COVID-19 was five times higher for unvaccinated adults than for adults who had been fully vaccinated and castrated, according to the CDC.
